What are the benefits of donating my vehicle to Tarrant Area Food Bank?

The Food Bank receives a cash donation. Your gift enables us to provide food, nutrition information for eating on a limited budget and other services to North Central Texas residents who are struggling with hunger.

You benefit by being able to reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized; plus, you avoid the costs associated with selling your car.  No need to pay for advertising, vehicle registration, insurance and repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer.

What does Tarrant Area Food Bank do with the vehicle?

Donated vehicles are sold at private auction by a trusted, independent third party, and the Food Bank receives the proceeds to help feed hungry Texans in our 13-county service area.

Does Tarrant Area Food Bank handle everything for me?

We make donating your car as simple and convenient as possible at no charge to you. The Food Bank has a partnership with Charitable Auto Resources, Inc. (CARS), which we chose for their expertise, customer service policies and references.  All calls and issues are ultimately referred to CARS.  If you have any questions about the process that are not answered in this FAQ, call our CARS representative toll free at 1-855-850-GIVE (4483).  For questions about donating to the Food Bank, please email Joan McInerney.

CARS, based in California, is owned and operated by a nonprofit social service agency that works with other nonprofit organizations across the country in outsourcing their vehicle donation program.

Do you only accept cars for donation?

Many types of motor vehicles are accepted including motorcycles, trucks, cars and boats, and under the right circumstances, motor homes, off-road vehicles, commercial trucks and even airplanes.

Does my vehicle need to be in running order for me to donate it?

In some cases we take your vehicle, running or not.  However, it must have an engine and be towable. (Vehicles in poor condition may be declined because the cost to tow them may be more than the value of the vehicle.) If you have any questions, call and talk with our representative toll free at 1-855-850-GIVE (4483).

What paperwork will I need?

The only paperwork needed is a signed, clear title.  Have your title with you when you call-in your donation or complete the online form.  Please note: A "clear title" indicates that the title is in the name of the donor without a lien, or the title is accompanied by a "Lien Satisfied" letter furnished by the lender.

What if I can't find the title?

To obtain a duplicate title, all you need is a copy of your driver's license for the Texas Department of Transportation to issue a duplicate title over the counter for a nominal fee.

What if my vehicle doesn't have a current registration or state inspection sticker?

We can accept a vehicle without a state inspection sticker or current registration as long as you have a clear title for the vehicle.

How long will it be before my vehicle is picked up?

Once we have all the necessary information, an authorized towing company will contact you within 2 to 3 business days to schedule a convenient time for the pick-up. You do NOT pay for the towing.

Do I have to be with the vehicle at the time of pick-up?

No. special arrangements can be made by calling our representatives toll-free at 1-855-850-GIVE (4483).

Will I be given a receipt for my vehicle when it is picked up?

Yes. When your vehicle is picked up, the authorized tow driver will give you a document called a "Donation" or "Pick-Up" Receipt. This receipt is a legal document and should be kept.  Do NOT allow your vehicle to be picked up unless you are given a Donation/Pick-Up Receipt.  If you have any questions, please call our toll-free number 1-855-850-GIVE (4483).

What do I need to do BEFORE the vehicle is picked up?

Be sure to remove all confidential information (including repair or maintenance records due to the personal information on these documents) and possessions including garage door openers and toll road transponders. For vehicles registered in Texas, you can remove the license plates or leave them on the vehicle for our partner, Charitable Auto Resources (CARS), to dispose of them.

Do I need to have my vehicle appraised?

You are not required to have your vehicle appraised.

Do I need to do anything AFTER the vehicle is picked up?

As a donor of a vehicle registered in Texas, you need to notify the Department of Transportation within 30 days of the date of pickup that you no longer own the vehicle.  You can notify the Texas DOT online or by mail.

These requirements vary from state to state.  For more information, call our toll-free number 1-855-850-GIVE (4483).  Our representatives at Charitable Auto Resources have a wealth of information at their fingertips to assist you with a vehicle registered in any state.

Tax-Related Questions

Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?

Yes.  Our tow driver will issue a Donation/Pick-Up Receipt at the time the vehicle is picked up.  This receipt will indicate the donor's names as well as the year, make, model and condition of the vehicle being donated.  Along with the Food Bank's thank-you letter, this will be the only receipt if the vehicle sells for $500 or less.  If that happens, it is up to you as the donor to determine the value of your deduction as long as it is $500 or less.

What can I claim as a tax deduction?

If the sale of the donated vehicle exceeded $500, the taxpayer's deduction is limited to the gross proceeds of the sale, as reported on IRS Form 1098-C.  If the sale is less than $500, consult your tax advisor about the amount you can deduct.

What do I need for documentation if the proceeds from my vehicle donation exceed $500?

For a vehicle that sells for more than $500, donors are no longer responsible for determining the deductible value of their donation.  Instead, after the vehicle has been sold and you have submitted your Tax Identification Number (TIN) to our partner, Charitable Auto Resources, an IRS Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes, will be mailed to you within 30 days of the sale stating the amount of gross proceeds received from your car.  The Form 1098-C will be your tax receipt for your charitable contribution.

How is the value determined on the vehicle donated?

The value is determined by the gross proceeds raised from the sale of the donated vehicle.
